Accidents Happen, Here’s Your Halloween Child Safety Guide

Who doesn’t love a good scare on Halloween?

BUT NO ONE wants a scare when it comes to child safety.

VanDerGinst Law wants everyone to be safely spooky so here are a few tips to keep your kids safe this Halloween.

Child Safety

According to Safe Kids Worldwide, “Children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year.”

To help keep kids safe and reduce the risk of injury:

1) Use reflective tape or stickers on costumes and bags. If possible use lights, including lighted shoes, glow sticks, or flashlights to alert passing vehicles.

2) Masks can obstruct the ability to see, try face paint or makeup as an alternative.

3) Costumes that are too large or bulky can be trip hazards. Ensure all costumes fit properly to prevent slips and/or falls.

4) Children under 12 should not be out at night without adult supervision, even in a group. Always have adult supervision and remind kids to always stay with the group and not run off or ahead.

5) Pre-plan your route to include the shortest distance and as few street crossings as possible.

6) Minimize your own use of a vehicle to help prevent injuries and accidents to others. The more vehicles, the more likely it is that an accident will occur.

7) Neither kids nor adults should be using electronic devices. Keep your head up and pay attention to potential trip hazards like uneven sidewalks.

8) Remind kids to:

  • Stick to safe areas that are known and well lite.
  • Always look left, right, then left again when crossing the street.
  • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street.
  • Always use a sidewalk, never walk in the middle of the road.
  • Walk facing traffic and as far to the left as possible.
  • Walk, never run.
  • Never dart out from between cars.
  • Never cross between parked cars.
  • Look for cars that are turning around or backing up. Remind kids that cars that are backing up can’t see them.

As adults, it is our responsibility to ensure EVERY child’s safety, especially on Halloween when it’s more dangerous for everyone. Slow down, be alert, minimize distractions, and, of course, don’t drink and drive!
