Back-to-School Safety: Protecting Kids on the Road
As summer winds down and the school year begins, streets and sidewalks in our communities get a little busier. School buses are back on their routes, parents are lining up for drop-off and pick-up, and more children are walking and biking to class. It’s the perfect time for a reminder about back-to-school safety—for drivers, parents, and students alike.
For Drivers:
- Slow Down in School Zones: Observe posted speed limits and watch for crossing guards and children who may dart into the street unexpectedly.
- Obey Bus Laws: In both Iowa and Illinois, it’s illegal to pass a stopped school bus with its stop arm extended and lights flashing—no matter which direction you’re coming from (unless on a divided highway).
- Avoid Distractions: Keep phones down and eyes up, especially during morning and afternoon school hours.
For Parents:
- Plan a Safe Route: Choose sidewalks and intersections with crossing guards whenever possible.
- Teach Road Safety: Remind kids to stop, look both ways, and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
- Bike Smart: Make sure helmets fit correctly and bikes are in good working order.
For Students:
- Stay Alert: Avoid wearing headphones or looking at phones while walking near traffic.
- Be Visible: Wear bright clothing or reflective gear, especially in early morning or late afternoon light.
- Follow Bus Rules: Wait until the bus has stopped completely, use handrails, and cross in front of the bus where the driver can see you.
