Protecting Children in Online Spaces: Roblox Lawsuits Highlight Growing Concerns About Online Exploitation

The digital world can offer incredible opportunities for learning, creativity, and connection—but it also presents serious risks, especially for children. Recent lawsuits against Roblox and Discord are bringing national attention to the growing threat of online grooming and exploitation within popular gaming platforms.

In one heartbreaking case, the parents of a 15-year-old boy filed a lawsuit after their son died by suicide following months of online abuse. The lawsuit alleges that an adult predator contacted the teen through Roblox, gained his trust, and coerced him into sharing explicit content—despite all parental controls being enabled. The abuse allegedly continued through Discord’s messaging platform.

The family’s lawsuit claims that both companies failed to adequately detect, report, or prevent the exploitation that ultimately led to their son’s death.

These cases reflect broader concerns about Roblox’s chat features, safety oversight, and addictive design, particularly for young users. In recent years, other lawsuits have accused the company of allowing harmful conduct, including:

  • A 2023 class-action suit alleging Roblox profited from minors’ gambling on third-party channels.
  • Ongoing claims from parents whose children were stalked, groomed, or exploited online.
