Halloween Safety

Halloween Safety Tips from VanDerGinst Law

Keeping Our Communities Safe – One Trick-or-Treat at a Time

Halloween is one of the most exciting times of the year for kids and families across our communities. From haunted houses to costume parades, it’s a night filled with fun and imagination. But amidst all the excitement, safety should always come first. At VanDerGinst Law, we care deeply about the families we serve and want to help everyone enjoy a safe and happy Halloween.

Costume & Visibility Tips

  • Choose bright, reflective costumes. Add glow sticks, reflective tape, or LED lights to make kids visible to drivers.
  • Make sure costumes fit properly. Long hems can cause tripping, and masks can block vision—opt for non-toxic face paint when possible.
  • Comfortable footwear matters. Trick-or-treating involves a lot of walking—choose sturdy shoes over novelty ones.

  • Stick to well-lit areas and familiar neighborhoods. Always travel in groups and use sidewalks when available.
  • Look both ways before crossing the street. Drivers may be distracted or have reduced visibility after dark.
  • Carry a flashlight. It not only helps you see where you’re going but also helps others see you.
  • Check all candy before eating. Discard any unwrapped or suspicious treats.

Drivers, Be Extra Cautious

Halloween night sees more pedestrian traffic than almost any other evening of the year.

  • Slow down in residential areas. Children can dart out unexpectedly.
  • Avoid distractions. Stay off your phone and keep your eyes on the road.
  • Never drive under the influence. Plan ahead for a sober ride home if you’re attending a party.

For Homeowners

Help make your home safe for visiting trick-or-treaters:

  • Keep walkways clear of obstacles or decorations that could cause tripping.
  • Use battery-operated candles instead of open flames in pumpkins or lanterns.
  • Ensure outdoor lighting is bright enough to guide visitors safely to your door.
