Stevens-Johnson Syndrome is a condition that is not well known to the lay public. It is fairly rare. But, it is a serious disorder of the skin and mucous membranes. It usually occurs due to a reaction to a medication or an infection. It can be extremely painful and even life-threatening.
It can begin with flu-like symptoms such as:
- Sore throat
- Burning or itching eyes
The more troublesome symptoms include:
- Painful rash that spread over much of the body very quickly
- Blisters on the skin and mucous membranes of mouth, nose, eyes and genitals
- Skin pain
- Tongue swelling
- Facial swelling
- Shedding of skin
It can me caused by a number of medications including:
- Medications to treat seizures or mental illness (antipychotics and anticonvulsants)
- Medications to treat infection (penicillin)
- Pain relievers such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen and naproxen sodium
- Anti-gout medications
- Radiation therapy
It can also be caused by various infections:
Other complications can develop as a result of the syndrome including cellulitis, sepsis, eye problems, damage to internal organs and permanent skin damage.
Treatment usually includes stopping non essential medications which may have triggered the symptoms, fluid replacement and nutrition, wound care and eye care. Medications may be used to reduce pain, itching and inflammation. It is typical that patients will need to be hospitalized for a period of time. Often wound care is typical of what would be found in a burn unit at a hospital. For severe cases recovery may take several months.
Personal Injury Claims
Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS), also known as Erythema Multiforme, Leyll’s Syndrome, and in its later stages, Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN), is a serious and potentially life-threatening disease.
Pharmaceutical manufacturers are aware of the risks associated with their drugs, yet proper warnings are for the most part inadequate. In many cases manufacturers may be held liable for the injuries that their medications cause, including SJS and TEN. The costs of treatment can be astronomical. The pain associated with the condition and treatment is overwhelming. Persons with SJS and TEN can be permanently disfigured and have an increased risk to future outbreaks. Hospitalization and convalescence can also lead to lost wages.
In some cases the physicians who prescribed the medication which triggered the SJS and TEN may also be implicated if they knew or should have known that it was counter-indicated.
