VanDerGinst Law is investigating claims that Just For Men® hair dye may be responsible for allergic reactions and chemical burns in users.
The cosmetic dye, which has been in use since 1987, has recently been linked to severe adverse reactions, even in men who have been using the dye for years or even decades.
Reports of Severe Reactions Mounting
The website ConsumerAffairs.com, a reputable aggregator of consumer product complaints, has collected nearly 400 reports of serious chemical burns associated with Just For Men within the past four years—many from long-term users with no prior incidences of reactions.
These men and others have reported serious side effects after using Just For Men, such as:
- Chemical burns
- Cellulitis (bacterial skin infection)
- Weeping blisters and skin lesions
While some of these symptoms may fade in time, hospitalizations due to severe complications from Just For Men hair dye have also been reported.
Skin Reactions Caused By Harsh Chemicals
One of the main ingredients in Just For Men is a chemical called p-Phenylenediamine (PPD). This chemical has been used in hair dyes since the 1880s, and problems have been reported for nearly as long. In fact, PPD was banned in France and Germany for nearly 100 years.
The American Contact Dermatitis Society named PPD Allergen of the Year in 2006 in an effort to bring attention to the risks that the chemical poses to consumers, especially the possibility of severe skin reactions after exposure to the chemical in hair dyes. These reactions are especially serious in African-Americans, who tend to use darker colors of dye and thus are exposed to higher levels of PPD.
In addition to containing irritating chemicals, Just For Men also lacks procedures which can reliably test for reactions on delicate facial skin prior to use. While the dye’s instructions call for testing on the arm skin to check for allergies, the skin on the face is much more sensitive. Men who show no reaction to the dye on their arm may have a completely different reaction to Just For Men mustache or beard dye on their face.
