On March 12, 2015, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued notice of a Zimmer knee replacement recall. The Zimmer Persona® Trabecular Metal™ Tibial Plate was recalled due to an increase in complaints of loosening and radiolucent lines. The tibial plate is one of the three main components used in a total knee replacement. Loosening of any part of a knee replacement is a serious complication which usually requires additional surgery to correct the problem. Radiolucent lines are seen on x-rays and often are the first sign of loosening.
The Zimmer Persona® knee replacements have only been on the market for about three years. Most joint replacements are expected to last for 15 to 20 years. The increased number of loosening complaints is a very serious problem.
Symptoms of loosening can include increase in knee pain, loss of motion, difficulty ambulating, giving way, popping and instability.
11,658 of these devices were recalled.
