Child Pedestrians
In 1994, 806 child pedestrians ages 15 and younger were killed and 30,000 were injured. These figures equal an average of 86 child pedestrians killed or injured each day. Children aged five through 15 represent only 16 percent of the U.S. population, yet their demographic accounted for over a third of all pedestrian injuries in 1994.
Pedestrian deaths are higher among young males than young females. However, this troubling trend is frequently overshadowed by the high motor vehicle occupant death rate for teenagers.
Something Can Be Done
The injury and fatality rates for young pedestrians are troubling, but they can be changed. Parents can teach their kids to be more careful around moving motor vehicles. Programs in schools and throughout communities help to educate children have been successful in reducing these injuries and deaths. In addition, local authorities across the country are calming traffic to reduce the severity and number of pedestrian crashes. As traffic slows down, children have a better chance of avoiding injury and death.
