Prozac is an antidepressent sometimes prescribed to young adults. On December 13th, 2006, the FDA concluded that antidepressant prescriptions to young adults can be risky due to the potential the drugs may cause suicidal thoughts. As a remedy, the organization proposeed expanding the labeling of all anti-depressents to include an expanded warning regarding suicidal thoughts in patients ranging in age from 18-24.
Two other studies released that year linked Prozac to other alarming conditions. When taken along with certain migraine medications, Prozac can cause what is known as serotonin syndrome, in which high levels of serotonin make serious changes in how the brain, muscles and digestive system work. Additionally, showed that women taking Prozac during pregnancy are six times more likely to give birth to a baby with persistent pulmonary hypertension than those not taking antidepressants.
