ACE Inhibitors

ACE inhibitors, or angiotensin-converting enzymes, are used in patients with heart disease and diabetes to treat hypertension, kidney damage, and heart failure. Used as an effective drug for over 25 years, the drug functions by relaxing blood vessels and increasing blood flow to the heart. Lotrel, Altace and Lisinopril are currently the top-selling ACE Inhibitors.

Recently, ACE inhibitors have been linked to birth defects. Mothers who use the inhibitors within the first trimester risk giving birth to children with severe heart and brain ailments. If the drug is taken later in the pregnancy, other serious birth defects can form, including kidney failure, skull deformities, lung problems and even the death of the fetus. Overall, using ACE inhibitors increases the chance for birth defects by approximately 5%. In any case, if you have used ACE inhibitors in the past and your child was born with birth defects, it would be wise to contact one of our ACE inhibitor lawyers as soon as possible.

In addition to the top-selling inhibitors Lotrel, Altace and Lisinopril, the following is a list of other inhibitors prescribed to patients with heart conditions:

  • Capoten (generic: captopril)
  • Lotensin (generic: benazepril)
  • Vasotec (generic: enlapril)
  • Aceon (generic: perindopril)
  • Accupril (generic: quinapril)
  • Univasc (generic: moexipril)
  • Mavik (genric: trandolapril)
  • Monapril (generic: fosinopril)
