Accutane
Accutane, or isotretinoin, is a drug used to combat severe acne. Introduced in 1982, the drug has since been linked to the onset of clinical depression and suicidal thoughts for patients who use the drug. In 1992, the FDA advised doctors who prescribed Accutane to monitor their patients for signs of depression.
Public awareness of Accutane's harmful side effects was raised considerably when the son of a congressman, Representative Bart Stupak, comitted suicide after using the drug. The onset of depression for users of Accutane is stark in comparison to the usually incremental decline experienced by others who suffer from the condition. It appears without much warning or a catalyst and can be so severe as to induce suicide within days after the onset. If you or someone you love has suffered from depression and you believe it is the result of using Accutane, consult with one of our Accutane attorneys as soon as possible.
In addition, Accutane has been known to cause birth defects if taken by a pregnant mother during pregnancy or within a month after becoming pregnant. The birth defects include heart problems and mental retardation. In most cases a potential female user of Accutane will take a double-blind pregnancy test by a doctor to ensure there is no risk for potential birth defects. Over-the-counter pregnancy tests are not considered sufficient for such a purpose.
